OTTAWA — The Whirlpool plant in Ottawa will soon be incorporating wind energy into its facility, with the addition of a wind turbine coming by the end of the year.

The investment in the Ottawa plant, along with a similar investment in the corporation’s Marion plant, will total $13.5 million, according to a corporate press release. Built and financed by One Energy, the 1.5-megawatt turbines are the same design as the ones currently used at Whirlpool’s Findlay facility.

“Whirlpool Corporation is proud to be a global leader in sustainable on-site energy generation for manufacturing, and this project is the latest to demonstrate our commitment to sustainable and renewable solutions,” said Ron Voglewede, Global Sustainability Director for Whirlpool Corporation, in the press release. “In addition to lowering our operational footprint and costs, we are continuing to optimize and innovate the appliances that are being built in Marion and Ottawa to lower energy and water consumption to help our consumers reduce their environmental footprints, while improving performance.”

Whirlpool anticipates the turbine at the Ottawa plant will offset its electricity consumption by 34 percent, resulting in many of the products manufactured at the plant, such as dishwashers, freezers and clothes dryers, being made in part with wind energy.

“In addition to our commitment to sustainable energy, on-site energy generation enables us to be more efficient long-term,” Ottawa plant lead Jenni Hanna said. “This project strengthens our manufacturing presence in our local community. Whirlpool Corporation’s Ottawa Operations is proud to be part of this initiative.”

Whirlpool Corporation is also creating a $5,000 Megawatt STEM Scholarship that will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from an Ottawa area high school.

The Ottawa plant manufactures full-size freezers sold by the Whirlpool, Amana and Maytag brands.
