Time To Time the Turbo!

Whether you've purchased a factory-equipped turbocharged vehicle or introduced a bit of forced induction to an existing powerplant, the first mod we suggest may not be the one you expected or want to hear. This component isn't a larger downpipe or front mount intercooler, but the often-neglected turbo timer.

If you don't already know, oils that lubricate and cool the turbo bearings can become trapped within the slug, this is far from good. Over time this oil will harden and damage the turbo. Nothing looks dorkier than being a human turbo timer, but allowing the turbine and oil cool down is a must. That's where the turbo timer comes into play; by leaving the engine running for a few seconds or minutes, a turbo timer can preserve and extend the life of that muy expensive turbo you love so much. That's why we've taken the time to install a Blitz Turbo_Undefined_6/201205/19/2117.html">Dual Turbo Timer into our project 240SX. Since this little handy dandy turbo timer also doubles as a boost gauge, we've killed two birds with one stone.

Already intimate with Skylines and SR swaps, we felt that Motorex was more than qualified to install the nifty-looking Blitz DTT. Chief tech, Ken Flores was kind enough to walk us through a procedure that shouldn't take even a beginner more than an afternoon, given all the necessary tools and equipment are at the ready. As with any install, you are the only person who can determine whether or not you are qualified to properly install this device. Should you have any questions or concerns, we recommend you seek the advice of a local shop.

1. First things first, disconnect the negative battery cable. It's better to be safe than sorry.

2. Now, determine where the turbo timer works best for you. In our case, we chose the S14's ashtray---nice little sleeper style. We can modify the timer settings by opening up the tray and hide the unit as not to attract unwanted attention.

3. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the ignition cover. In our application, we only needed to remove the lower ignition cover. Your install may differ.

4. Disconnect the exposed ignition coupler and make a "loop" by connecting an aftermarket harness (such as HKS or GReddy) to the two ignition couplers. In our case, Ken custom fabbed a compatible harness. Since the ignition is "looped," you should be able to start the car.

5. Connect the aftermarket harness direction to the control module three pin harness.

6. Find a suitable chassis location for the two grounds. We found a perfect spot on the firewall. Try to avoid an area where the grounds may be accidentally stepped or yanked.

7. Use some electric tape to clean up the wires and hide the control module. You won't want anything exposed.

8. Connect the loose purple wire to the hand brake; used the supplied hardware to wire the hand brake wire. This is a security measure. When the vehicle is stopped and ignition is removed, the turbo timer will only activate if the hand brake is engaged. Should someone break in and disengage the hand brake, the engine will shut off.

9. If you don't want a boost reading, you're done, connect the display to the control module, connect the battery and you're good to go. However, should you want a boost reading, a little more work is necessary.

10. Connect the vacuum line to the control module and locate a spot on the firewall to feed the line through; if there is no suitable spot on the firewall to pass the vacuum you'll need to drill a hole. We chose the latter.

11. "T" off the line to a vacuum hose in the engine bay. Make sure the "T" and vacuum hose have a solid connection. Drivability will suffer should there be a leak in the lines.

12. Viola! All your hard work has paid off. Not only will you have a reliable turbo timer, but a boost reading---particularly useful for maintenance purposes.
