The plant will have a capacity to produce three lakh assemblies annually

CHENNAI: BorgWarner Cooling Systems India (Private) Ltd has set up a permanent production facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park at Sriperumbudur near here.

BorgWarner is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BorgWarner Inc ($4 billion sales in 2009), an auto component and systems manufacturer.

The plant has come up on a 6.3-acre land at a cost of Rs. 30 crore.

The facility will have capacity to produce three lakh assemblies a year. It will make viscous fan drives, fans and a few other thermal management products. The plant, it is stated, has sufficient headroom to expand in future.

BorgWarner Cooling Systems began its operations in India in 2001 as a sales office that imported products which helped in thermal management of engines used in sports utility vehicles and heavy vehicles. In 2004, it set up an interim facility at Ayanambakkam in Chennai.

With domestic market (for products that BorgWarner makes) growing at about 10-12 per cent (currently pegged at Rs. 100 crore), the U.S. subsidiary has chosen to set up a permanent manufacturing base in India.

Umashankar, Managing Director of BorgWarner Cooling Systems, is confident that his company could double its sales by 2014.

At present, the company's turnover is around Rs. 49 crore. This is expected to increase to Rs. 65 crore this year.

Even as the company is hoping to focus on emerging segments, it is also looking at export options from the Sriperumbudur facility.
