i am lookin to get the build setup ready for my m42 transplant into the '02. i plan on eventually going with a garrett gt28 series, but for now i was just going to get a cheaper setup in while i wait on funds. my plan was to use a turbo from a tsm. i am trying to decide if a 14b will be sufficient or if i would want a 16b and how the drawbacks would affect my decision. i know the 14b is capable of some respectible numbers at around 20psi (around 280 i've heard but i dont know the truth so correct me if im wrong) i will be running lower cr pistons and forged internals and the m42 is a 1.9l motor. my question is will that high of psi on a 14b make the turbo unreliable enough to where i would want a 16g to make that power to help maintain driveability and reliability. and if i do so how much lag will the little 1.9l engine have on spooling that. any help from you DSM guys with more knowledge specifically pertaining to your turbo's would be great! thanks, guys!

get a 16g. my experience with 14b's i s that they hate going over 15 psi

how bad do you think the lag would be on it though? what rpm would i expect to begin spooling in?
-thanks, kevim

a 16g will not lag too bad, I'd say you'd be able to have full boost around 2750-3K.

ok.

-oh my other question was, what flange does the 14b have? the 16g?

TDO5H I believe.

if you stick with a smaller Garrett turbo, you won't have to reflange your manifold(s)/header(s). Plus I don't know how the oil drain setup is on a mitsu turbo, but the Garretts generally keep the same stuff

if you plan on getting a DSM turbo i would say 16g if your concerned about spool....i have an evo 8 and they come stock with a TDO5HR - 16G6-9.8T ....I see full boost around 3600-3800 considering my cutout and lower ic pipe help with spool....and when i logged my car for lbs/min @ 22 psi i'm flowing right at 35 lbs/min...and general rule is you can yeild about 9.5-10.5 HP per lb....next step above a 16g would be a 20g they will flow close to 45 lbs/min but lack in the spool department

a Garrett T28 is capable of about the same flow as a 16g but spools slightly faster.

get a Forced Performance 3052 dual ball bearing. Good street manors and spool up is in the late 3k range.

he wants a cheaper setup, while he waits for funds for his gt28 series, why in gods name would he drop 1300 on a turbo?

14b and 16g have a mitsu flange. on a 14b i see full boost fucking early like 2500 rpm on my evo 3 16g i would see full boost arounf 3200-3400 i believe on my 20g i see full boost like 3800-3900.
If you plan to run 20psi though stay away from a 14b anything over 18psi and its way outta its efficieny range and you will be blowing alot of hot air. 20psi on a 16g would be much better and i would reccomend an evo 3 16g.

and if you are concerned about MPG i would go with a bigger turbo because the 14b is so damn spool happy i get ALOT better gas milage in my highly moded DSM with a 20g than i do on my DDSM with just a K&N, vaccume line removal, and no balance shafts with a 14b.

hey thanks for all the info! im just not very familiar with DSM turbo's! gas mileage isnt that big of a concern because its basically just a summer car, not a dd. also, was i correct in sayin to get 280hp i would need to run 20psi on a 14b? just for reference, how many psi should i run on he 16g to get about 275-300hp to the wheels out of the m42?
-thanks, kevin

never enough, and then one point it's too much and BOOM, time for a new turbo...

lol yeah i understand, but to get about 275-300rwhp on my 2.0l m42 how much psi should i run out of a 16g?
