Porsche aims at manufacturing 75,000 Macan compact sports utility vehicles by the end of 2013.

Uwe-Karsten Staedter, Porsche’s procurement chief, is said to have announced that production of the Macan at the Leipzig factory will be increased from the current 45,000 units to 75,000 units by the end of 2013.

In February Porsche has confirmed the name of its next SUV to be Macan, which in Indonesian means Tiger, and that it will be manufactured at the Leipzig factory, in which the automaker invested €500 million. The model is based on the MLB platform and Porsche hopes that Macan will double its sales. The model is expected to hit the European market in 2013 and reach Australia at the beginning of 2014. One of the automaker’s engineers confirmed that the engine will be different from the Q5 and from those of the Volkswagen Group.

“It will be a Porsche engine. We are also very impressed about this car,” said Porsche engine engineering manager Arno Bogl.

Macan will feature a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol unit, with which Porsche hopes to surpass its rivals. Porsche admitted that building the Macan has been a challenge as it will be totally different from what has been seen at the Audi models.
