4 Foreword Aircraft and aviation are very important industries in both social and economical aspects. Aviation alone transports few billions passenger every year. Aircraft design has also critical impact on the society and world economics because, for example, efficient airplanes will discharge considerably fewer pollutants in the atmosphere and they will burn less fuel. Efficient airplanes are product of extensive and intensive research performed by academy as well as by the investment of private sector in new technology. In the academic world, few universities worldwide count with a specific chair in aircraft design. Most universities consider only basic disciplines such as aerodynamics, aeronautical structures, flight physics and space technologies as the fundamentals to provide higher education to aeronautical engineering students. They disregard aircraft design as a specific discipline worthy of creating a specific chair. However, aircraft design enables the proper integration and practical application of all other disciplines. The authors of the present book have together 30 years of experience working for one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world. Besides, they are currently teaching aircraft design in a higher education institution in Brazil. There are several good books on the market. However, those books were written mainly in the years 1980 to 1990 and have established a lot of design data, collected from aircraft designs of the 1960s to the 1980s. Also at that time, aircraft design was a sequential process starting with aerodynamics, followed by weight breakdown, defining wing and tailplane areas and checking stability and controllability. Most the methodology of these books is simple due to the lack of computer power in the past. However, aircraft design in the aircraft industry evolved from a sequential process in the past to the today utilization of high-fidelity multi-disciplinary design and optimization frameworks, where all disciplines are taken into account simultaneously and where everything depends upon everything. Therefore, aircraft manufacturers of today are conscious that modern engineers need to understand the whole aircraft as a complex system. There is a necessity of understanding the multi-disciplinary aspects of aircraft design. Aircraft design disciplines is the best way to incorporate this philosophy. Most books written in the past do not consider or neglect these aspects. Aircraft systems have evolved considerably. For instance, fly-by-wire systems have changed the way commercial and military aircraft are designed and flown. Aircraft with fly-by-wire systems are safer, more reliable, easier to fly, more maneuverable and fuel efficient, and maintenance costs are reduced. All this new systems must be already be taken into account in the conceptual design phase, where the aircraft sizing is carried out. The proper understanding of aviation and manufacturing business is very important for engineers. In this context, the present work provides the process and information for the elaboration of a business plan for a transport airplane project. That includes how to conduct a market survey, technological assessment, financial and risk analysis, and establishment of requirements.
