Infiniti variable compression engine LA Auto Show news

Infiniti Variable Compression

At this year’s LA Auto Show, Infiniti will do the usual automaker stuff and show off some special editions of cars that are already on dealer lots; more interesting, though, is the new production-ready variable-compression engine at the heart of Infiniti’s display.

There have been attempts at variable-compression engines in the past -- most notably the failed Saab SVC engine from the early 2000s -- but none have made it to production. Infiniti’s engine uses an interesting multilink connecting rod that raises or lowers the piston in relation to the cylinder head -- thus achieving a variable-compression ratio. Currently, the engine can produce ratios ranging from 14:1 to 8:1, responding to the needs of the driver. If this engine proves to be a success, it could be as impactful as the introduction of electronic fuel injection or forced induction.

Flanking the new engine will be the QX Sport Inspiration that debuted at the Beijing auto show, the Q60 3.0t Sport and the Neiman Marcus edition Q60. The QX Sport Inspiration is a look at Infiniti’s future midsize SUVs. The Q60 3.0t Sport is the introduction of Infiniti’s slightly lower-output sport coupe. Unlike the 400-hp engine found in the Neiman Marcus edition or Red Sport, the 3.0t Sport will only have 300 hp heading to the rear wheels.

The Neiman Marcus edition Q60 is, essentially, a gold-painted version of Infiniti’s new sports coupe, which can be found in the Neiman Marcus Christmas book. The car also comes with an exclusive white leather bag and a special plaque with the car's VIN.
