Long Beach Public Library wants to be your summer travel agent with this year’s motto: “Reading Takes You Everywhere.”

There are 12 library sites throughout the city participating in the system’s free Summer Reading program that librarians said is designed for the entire family to enjoy. Those who register online and read books can collect prizes and anyone can take part in the Summer Reading program's special events.

A kick off celebration for Summer Reading is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Michelle Obama Library Branch (5870 Atlantic Ave.). Registration opens that day, and there will be bilingual music performances, crafts and interactive music activities.

Another highlight on the summer schedule is the conclusion of the Summer Reading program at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Los Altos Branch Library (5614 E. Britton Drive). There will be a celebration that includes a performance by comedian magician Justin Rivera, who has been featured on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” as well as at local comedy clubs and The Magic Castle in Los Angeles.

Summer programming also includes the return of free Maker Camps for youngsters ages 10 to 16, who are invited to build, think and explore — with professional guidance — using some of the technology available at certain branches. The camps are offered for four weeks beginning July 7 and ending Aug. 2, at the Main Branch (101 Pacific Ave.), Obama Branch and Mark Twain Library (1401 E. Anaheim). For details, visit

Check with your closest library branch or the LBPL website for a schedule of all the happenings taking place at local libraries throughout the summer, from the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra’s “Petting Zoo,” Musical Theatre West dramatic performances, puppet shows, Cuentos Y Cantos bilingual storytime, and much more.
